Stocks soar after Fed pledges low rates into '13 (AP)
August 09, 2011
WASHINGTON – A plunging stock market and a stalled U.S. economy may force the Federal Reserve to use the dwindling number of tools it has left in an effort to boost growth and keep the country from sliding back into recession.
At the very least, the central bank is expected to acknowledge all the adverse things that have occurred since its policymaking committee last met in June.
But many private economists say they believe that the situation has grown so dark in recent days that Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and his colleagues will be forced to do more.

WASHINGTON – The military has opened an investigation into Saturday's devastating helicopter crash in eastern Afghanistan that killed 30 U.S. troops and eight Afghans.
Pentagon officials would not discuss the details of the probe, but it will no doubt address a host of questions surrounding the crash, including a look at the insurgent threat and the instructions given to the special operations team crowded into the Chinook helicopter as it raced to assist other U.S. forces.

Report: Nitrate transport down Mississippi causing ‘dead zones’ in Gulf
August 09, 2011
A newly released study by the United States Geological Survey shows that nitrate concentrations in the Mississippi River Basin did not consistently decline from 1980 to 2008. The increased nitrate levels directly affect the Gulf of Mexico, where they contribute to “dead zones,” or hypoxia.
Dead zones come about when oxygen levels are so low that marine life in bottom and near-bottom waters cannot be supported.
According to the Geological Survey study, “state and federal partners serving on the Mississippi River Gulf of Mexico Watershed Nutrient Task Force are striving to decrease nutrients transported to the Gulf to reduce the ...

FURIOUS Sydney Roosters captain Braith Anasta and other senior players will help decide the fate of Todd Carney, Nate Myles and Frank Paul Nuuausala after they broke a self-imposed team booze ban by drinking until 2am yesterday.
Last night, Roosters officials were refusing to rule out the possibility that Carney would be sacked after his latest alcohol-related incident but that seems unlikely, particularly as there is no suggestion of anti-social behaviour.

Dark matter in the Kim-Nilles mechanism
August 09, 2011
The Kim-Nilles mechanism relates the μ term with the axion scale fa, leading to the axino-Higgsino-Higgs Yukawa coupling of order μ/fa. This can bring a dangerous thermal production of axinos. If the axino is stable, its mass has to be as small as O(0.1 keV), or the reheat temperature should be lower than O(10 GeV) taking the lower axion scale 1010 GeVin order not to overclose the Universe. If the axino decays to a neutralino, the overproduced neutralinos can reannihilate appropriately to saturate the observed dark matter density if the ...
Asymmetric dark matter and effective operators
August 09, 2011
In order to annihilate in the early Universe to levels well below the measured dark matter density, asymmetric dark matter must possess large couplings to the standard model. In this paper, we consider effective operators which allow asymmetric dark matter to annihilate into quarks. In addition to a bound from requiring sufficient annihilation, the energy scale of such operators can be constrained by limits from direct detection and monojet searches at colliders. We show that the allowed parameter space for these operators is highly constrained, leading to nontrivial requirements that any model of asymmetric dark matter must satisfy.
