After finishing Episode 2 for the second time earlier today, I can only dream of what is yet to come in the next installment of the Half-Life 2 story arc.

Well, to be completely honest, I never have finished the original Half-Life, but I am working on it. From what I have played of it though, it has no comparison in story when putting the sequel by its side. In fact, you can pretty much sum it up in about 60 seconds.

Half-Life
So in short the original Half-Life, the game opens with a science experiment that goes wrong and opens a portal to a parallel universe. Aliens from the world of Xen start pouring into Earth at the Black Mesa Research Facility. The entirety of the first game is all about escaping the Black Mesa Research Facility to tell people about what is going on while evading Marines who are trying to cover up the incident.
Half-Life 2
Half-Life 2 is a classic semi-apocalyptic story. It takes place shortly after the conclusion of the 7 Hour War, in which the aliens from Xen and the Combine conquered the entire planet in approximately 7 Hours. Cities became highly monitored areas where the Combine patrolled and suppressed any opposition. While Dr. Kleinier, and Dr. Vance worked on creating a Star-Trek-ish teleportation device based on Albert Einstein’s laws of physics, Dr. Freeman ran through City 17 to Black Mesa East facility. When it was discovered Dr. Freemen ran through the zombie infested Ravenholm where he met Brother Gregory who escorted him towards Nova Prospekt, the Combine’s maximum security prison where Dr. Vance had been sent after being captured. After returning to City 17 via a hijacked train, Dr. Freeman helps the resistance (Lambda is the signal of the resistance) push back the Combine to the Citadel. Pushing all the way to the top where former Black Mesa Administrator Dr. Breen (and his double-agent sidekick Dr. Mossmen) was running the Combine occupation via instructions from the nearest Advisor. With the help of Alyx Vance, Dr. Freeman uses the Gravity Gun to transport Dr. Breen to an unknown universe without the option of return.
Half-Life 2: Episode 1
Episode 1 take place withing minutes of the ending of Half-Life 2. Immediately following the collapse of the Citadel, Gordon and Alyx mysteriously were transported (via G-man led Vortaghans) to the bottom of the collapsing Citadel, where an unstable core threatened to kill everyone left in the rubble of City 17. While going to stabilize the core Gordon and Alyx experience the presence of a Combine Adviser, which is very unusual. After stabilizing the core Alyx noticed a high priority data packet that is moments away from being sent through the newly opened portal to the Combine universe. The rest of Episode 1 consists of Gordon and Alyx on the run to meet back up with Dr. Kleiner, Dr. Vance, and Dr. Mossmen.
Half-Life 2: Episode 2
Episode 2 opens with Gordon and Alyx on a cliff-side overlooking the totally destroyed City 17. Episode 2 picks up the story from Episode 1 with Gordon and Alyx on their way to the White Forest compound to give the Combine data pack to Dr. Kleiner, and allow the combined brainpower of Dr. Vance, Dr. Kleiner, and project lead Dr. Magnusson to send a rocket into orbit and close the Combine portal above City 17. While en-route Alyx is severely wounded by a Combine hunter (a Strider like minion). After a friendly Vortighan transports an unconcious Alyx to a local resistance outpost, Gordon must descend into a nearby Antlion colony to recover a volatile extract to save Alyx’s life. After recovering, Alyx and Gordon continue on their route to White Forest, which is preparing for the missile launch. After reaching the White Forest compound Gordon learns Dr. Mossmen has headed north on some research and exploration project, in which she discovers the long lost ship Borealis of competing Apeture Science . An alarm interrupts work at the compound alerting to a Combine breach in Missile Silo 2, where Gordon as usual goes to save the day. After fending off the Combine raiding party, Gordon catches a short break before fending of the main Combine force of a dozen Striders. After saving and securing the White Forest compound, the missile is launched and the portal closed. After the successful closure of the portal, Dr. Vance escorts Alyx and Gordon to a helicopter will be used to go rescue Dr. Mossman. Before boarding, two Combine Advisors break into the warehouse and kill Dr. Vance. Episode 2 ends with Alyx mourning the death of her father.

Half-Life 2: Episode 3
As of February 2008, Valve has not revealed any of Episode 3’s story other than saying, we’re still writing it. In fact, Episode 3 was not shown at this years E3 convention at Los Angeles, but recently concept art and information has been released. The following concept art (seen below) has been released.

If the follow the proposed story arc there is no denying the inclusion of the following points in Episode 3.Increased Knowledge of Apeture Science LaboratoriesBack story of the Borealis ice breaker vessel (which is alluded to in Episode 2, contents and story of disappearance are not known yet)Increased Knowledge of the G-ManIncreased Knowledge of the Combine Advisors
It seems the concept are released has hit some of these points, but more will be known when Valve (which has confirmed) releases more information in October at the E4All convention. I would be deeply disappointed if they did not develop on these ideas, as I would like to learn more about them.
Until October, like the G-man says, “Prepare for unforeseen consequences.”
